WHO/SAGE review of non-specific effects
WHO’s Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) has conducted a review of the non-specific effects of BCG, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine (DTP) and measles vaccine. Two independent reviews were carried out, an epidemiological review and an immunological review. SAGE discussed the evidence at a meeting held in Geneva April 3. The conclusions were just published in Weekly Epidemiological Record, page 233-235. SAGE concludes that “the non-specific effects on all-cause mortality warrant further research. SAGE recommended that the Immunization and Vaccines related Implementation Research Advisory Committee (IVIR-AC) be tasked with providing advice on which priority research questions need to be addressed in order to inform policy decisions, and what kinds of studies and study designs would provide answers to these questions”. The IVIR-AC will meet in June – we look forward to hearing more.
